When I bought my first dollhouse it was a gift for my granddaughter. One of the first things I discovered is that there are 2 primary materials used for dollhouse construction. Then came the question: “What is better … wooden dollhouses or plastic dollhouses?”
There are those who may disagree with the answer that came to my mind, but essentially, plastic dollhouses are toys, and wooden dollhouses can serve as both toys and projects for collectors and hobbyists. . So, to determine which building material is right for you, the first thing to consider is how the dollhouse will be used.
Sure there are hobbyists who will take an exception to my conclusion. In fact, for every object on earth there is at least one collector. So, I speak in general. Wooden dollhouses are the norm for most collectors.
Plastic dollhouses are more likely to be assembled, but the wooden variety most often requires assembly. So that too can help you make your own decision on what’s best for you.
Another consideration is the accessories and furnishings. Again, plastic dollhouses are more likely to have at least some, if not all, extras. When buying a baby girl, this can be a particularly attractive option.
Wooden dollhouse accessories are extraordinarily plentiful and come in almost every variety imaginable. You can pretty much replicate anything found in your home even down to the plates and cutlery. Another cool option is the ability to add electrical features such as lamps, chandeliers, and even appliances.
Something else you may want to look at is the style element. Sure, plastic dollhouses come in a myriad of styles, but there’s less variety than you’ll find with log houses.
A further consideration is the scale of the dollhouses. This is where many people make a mistake when making their purchase. The most popular doll size is 11½ inches, but dollhouses come in a variety of sizes. In other words, there is no such thing as “one size fits all”.
Wooden dollhouses, at least the ones most commonly used by collectors and hobbyists, are built in a 12 to 1 or 24 to 1 ratio. inch by foot. Since the average doll is almost a foot long, this means that the doll will appear in gigantic proportions compared to standard scale dollhouses.

Plastic dollhouses are also built for dolls of various sizes, so it’s important to do a little research to make sure the doll’s size works with the scale of the house.
Also, you should think about the durability of the dollhouse. Plastic is a good choice for play because it doesn’t break easily. Conversely, wooden structures, especially those used by hobbyists, can be brittle. If you settle for a wooden dollhouse for a little girl, make sure it was built to withstand children’s play.
Then there is the problem of cleanliness. Toys used by children should be easily cleaned. Again, plastic is the preferred material for easier cleaning.
