In 1996, while reading Depak Chopra’s books, he often quoted Jelauddin Rumi, a 12th century poet. I liked what I was reading and was more interested in Rumi’s poetry. I found out that until the age of 37 Rumi was a popular scholar. It was then that he met a mighty wandering dervish, Shams of Tabriz who changed Rumi’s life forever. After Shams passed away, Rumi transformed from teacher into artist and poet. Now, 800 years later, in the 21st century it is reborn in our western world where he removes us from the mundane into the kaleidoscope that his vision has brought.
I have to thank people like Coleman Barks, a poetry professor at the University of Georgia who has the knack of translating Rumi’s poetry into English, otherwise we may never have seen the life of poetry, art and imagination he bequeathed. For example:
